Here's what to do when an ambulance is behind you:
Stay Calm: Panic can lead to dangerous decisions. Take a deep breath and assess the situation.
Check Your Surroundings: Quickly look at your mirrors and assess the traffic around you. Identify potential areas where you can safely move.
Signal Your Intentions: Use your turn signals to clearly communicate to the ambulance driver and other drivers what you plan to do.
Pull Over Safely: If possible, safely pull over to the right side of the road. Ensure you are not obstructing any driveways, intersections, or other areas. If you are on a divided highway, pull over to the side that matches your direction of travel.
Keep Moving if Necessary: If you cannot safely pull over immediately (e.g., heavy traffic, narrow road), maintain your speed and direction. The ambulance driver will adjust their approach. Don't make sudden or erratic movements.
Avoid Stopping in an Intersection: Never stop in an intersection. Proceed through the intersection and then pull over to the side of the road as soon as it is safe.
Be Mindful of Other Emergency Vehicles: After the first ambulance passes, be alert for other emergency vehicles that may be following.
Do Not Follow the Ambulance: Never follow an emergency vehicle closely.
